11 Impressively Awesome and Extremely Hairy Pigs in the World

Most breeds of pig are raised for human consumptions. Although it is a food taboo to our Muslim brothers and sisters, it is still one of the most consumed animals in the world. Pigs also have one of the largest populations of domestically raised animal worldwide. Some breeds of pig are impressive for their large sizes, coloration and markings. In addition, some pig breeds are simply unique-looking for their long hair.

Here are some remarkable pig breeds with awesomely and spectacularly long hair.

1. Kunekune

There are only few pig breeds with long hair. Logically, it is not usual for pigs to have long hair because they are not raised for their hair but for their meat. The Kunekune is a hairy small breed of domestic pig that originated in New Zealand. It is becoming a popular pet too.

It is also characterized by piri-piri or wattles on its blower jaw. It also comes in different colors such as black and white, cream, ginger, black, gold-tip, tri-colored and brown.

2. Wild Boar

Wild Boars are amazingly unique pigs. Known scientifically as Sus scrofa, it is an extremely unique and hairy pig species and is considered the ancestor of domestic pig. It is also known as Wild Pig. It can be found in many parts of the world such as Europe, Asia and had been introduced in the Americas.

A Wild Boar male can attain a length of up to 200 cm excluding its 40 cm long tail. It can achieve a height of up to 110 cm and can attain a weight of up to 300 kg.  Females are relatively smaller in size.

3. Peccary

A Peccary is a weird-looking and hairy New World Pig. It can be found in North, Central and South America. It is usually 130 cm in length and can weigh as much as 40 kilograms.

It is also known as Javelina and Skunk Pig. In Portuguese, it is called Javali and Jabali Sajino or Pecari in Spanish.

4. Giant Forest Hog

The Giant Forest Hog is not too hairy but it does have long hair. Scientifically known as Hylochoerus meinertzhageni, this large-sized pig species is endemic to Africa.  A boar Giant Forest Hog is 2.3 meters in height with a length of 1.3 meters and weighs up to 275 kilograms. A sow or female Giant Forest Hog is relatively smaller

5. Gascon Pig

The not-so-hairy but longhaired Gascon is a rare domestic pig breed that originated in France. It is an endangered pig breed.

6. Visayan Warty Pig

The Visayan Warty Pig is a peculiar-looking pig species endemic to the Philippines. It is notable for its long and shaggy hair. This critically endangered pig species is scientifically named Sus cebifrons. It can be found in several islands in the Visayas, Philippines.

8. Bushpig

This exceptionally large pig species that inhabits forests can be found in East and Southern Africa. It can attain a height of up to 100 cm and can attain weights of 150 kg.  It can be found in several African countries such as Somalia, Ethiopia and others.

9. Guinea Hog

The Guinea Hog is a hairy pig breed that originated in the United States. It has erect ears and can weigh up to 90 kilograms. It is also called the Pineywoods Guinea, Guinea Forest hog, Acorn Eater, and Yard Pig.

10. Warthog

The Warthog is one of the oddest-looking pig species in the world. It can be found in South Africa grazing in grassland, woodland and savannah of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.  The Warthog is 1.5 cm in length and 75 kilograms in weight. It is also called Common Warthog or Phacochoerus africanus.

11. Mangalitsa
